Lets face it over indulgence of alcohol may seem like a good idea at the time but waking up with a banging heading and a mouth that tastes and feels like you’ve been licking the carpet isn’t great and often leads to regret and what is known as ‘the fear’ in the Urban dictionary.
Some people are lucky and don’t seem to suffer too much with just some tiredness and nothing a big fry up can’t cure, while others (including myself) pay for every drop of alcohol that passes our lips ( I can get a hangover from one glass of wine!)
Our hangovers are our bodies way of telling us it has been over burdened, it has become dehydrated, our blood sugar levels have declined and fatigue from toxins takes over.
Over the years I’ve tried many different remedies and now I have found a few great ways to beat my hangover into submission and also look after my liver at the same time so here we go!
We’ll start with the most obvious one and that is we have to combat the dehydration that is inevitable from alcohol consumption. Even people who don’t suffer too badly the morning after need to take heed to this one. Trying to get a glass or two of water over the course of your evening between the alcohol can really help and two before you go to bed. What’s even better than just water is an amazing product called Sufficient C. Each scoop added to your water provides 2000mg of vitamin C as well as L-lysine, bromelain and a 94% pure green tea extract. This will give your immune system a much need boost, aid your digestive system and most importantly aid your body in hydrating. I would recommend a large glass before bed and another when you wake up. One to avoid is coffee! You may think that this will give you the energy you need to get on with your day but the caffeine will only dehydrate you further and make your headache worse.
Nourish your liver
Whilst we are busy focusing on the pain in our heads or fuzziness we forget that the real part of body that needs looking after is our liver. It’s now working overtime to rid our body of toxins and needs some protection. Now this one is bitter by name and bitter in taste but it’s a wonderful product and just the tonic! Dr Shade’s Bitters no.9 is designed to strengthens your bodies natural cleansing system and remove the toxins, in turn it will aid in the restoration of your liver health. For anyone who has trouble with liquid formulas or bitterness there is an alternative from Ayush herbs called Livit-2 which comes in a capsule form to nourish and support your liver and give your immune system a boost at the same time!
Take a long soak in Himalayan mountain salt
Almost a third of toxins excrete from our skin. Soaking in a nice warm bath filled with Himalayan pink mountain salt is a great way to rejuvenate your skin, eliminate toxins and relax your muscles. You can buy in it most health food stores and online a large 1kg bag is normally about £5. I love a bath to de-stress and the salt can be added to your bath at all times and not just when hungover, its amazing for my dry skin too!
Feed your body the right way
The morning after often leads to cravings of fatty foods and a big fry up is top of the list for most people. This is due to the massive drop in your blood sugar levels and dehydration but these foods aren’t good for your already sensitive stomach and lead to gastric upset. (it should be noted though that a big hearty meal BEFORE you start drinking can help prevent or lessen your hangover as it lines the stomach!) As your body is already overloaded from the chemicals in alcohol and an overburden of acid its now time to increase alkalinity and get some vitamins and minerals in there. Eggs are a great source of vitamin B and are full of amino acids try having them scrambled, boiled or poached instead of fried with some whole wheat toast to help raise your blood sugar. Or why not try some oats, filled with B Vitamins, calcium and iron this superfood can help neutralise the acid build up and raise those blood sugar levels. Serve with some organic honey for an energy boost and sliced banana to raise your potassium levels.
Boost your glutathione levels.
In a previous blog post I talked about glutathione, what it is and what it does. You can read this here, in short Glutathione is our bodies master detoxifier. When we are ill or as we age it depletes and so our bodies ability to shift toxins reduces. This also happens after a bout of alcohol and we need to boost our glutathione levels to get our system up and running again. My previous blog post talked about various methods for doing this but for a hangover my absolute favourite is Quicksilver Scientific Glutathione complex. The reason I love this one so much is that it has other ingredients rather than just the Glutathione, it also has milk thistle (absolutely perfect for your supporting your liver!) and a suite of B Vitamins to up your energy. At £72.95 a bottle it may seem the priciest option but this is because it is a liposomal product. Liposomes are tiny microscopic bubbles that protect the nutrients as they travel though your stomach, protecting them from the acid. Once they reach the intestines the nutrients are then absorbed into your blood stream. This means that about about 98% of the product gets absorbed by our body whereas pills, powders, fizzies etc have about a 15% absorption rate.
Other supplements you can take
If you’re just looking for one all rounder supplement you can take then I quite like Revive active, called a “super food” it has 26 active ingredients in each sachet including the all important vitamin C. It’s a great daily supplement and can really help your immune system the morning after the night before. It can boost energy levels, reducing the fatigue associated with your hangover. Prices start at £12.50 for 10 sachets.
When all else fails to lift that grogginess and fatigue sometime a bit more sleep is the best option to let your body heal while you sleep. Take your supplements, have some food, water and a rest. Many of us don’t have this option due to our family lives and so in this case I recommend going the opposite way and going out for a walk with your partner/kids/dog. The fresh air will do your body a world of good and the gentle exercise will shift some of the fatigue, it may not seem like it but once you’re up and out the distraction will definitely help.
